Highlighting Notion’s update on April 7, 2020, were considerable improvements to the tablet experience. Alongside that headliner, Notion tweaked its typography, allowed date mentions within comments, and fixed various bugs.
Tablet Overhaul
The experience on iPads and Android-powered tablets is now more in line with the desktop experience.
- When oriented in landscape, users can leave open the sidebar; it will close automatically when the tablet is tilted into portrait orientation.
- Columns remain in landscape orientation.
- Tablets support the bulk of keyboard shortcuts, including slash commands and arrow navigation.
- Menus open as popups rather than screen takeovers.
Typography Teaks
Notion also made subtle tweaks to its typography for an improved aesthetic and readability. All styles saw improvements to sizing and spacing, but the Mono
format received and entirely new look.
Mono and Serif also gained better support for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Cyrillic characters.
Date Mentions in Comments
Users could previously mention people and pages in comments, but dates could only be mentioned in the contents of a page. This update introduced the ability to mention dates within comments.
Bug Fixes
As with all updates, this one made minor enhancements and addressed various bugs. Via Notion itself:
- When you’re in the comment editor or the discussion section of a page, you can now use the ↑ arrow on your keyboard to edit your last comment.
- Browser tab titles now include the name of your database view.
- The @mention menu no longer disappears while you’re typing (you can always hit
esc
to dismiss the menu). - Various date picker UX improvements — should be a little less finicky now!
- Number formatting (such as percent, dollar, etc.) is now retained in PDF exports.
- Link to Page blocks are now retained in PDF exports.
- Fixed a bug that caused table columns to appear out of order in PDF exports.
- Fixed a bug that caused bookmark blocks to be lost if the request to the bookmarked website timed out.
- Fixed a bug that caused the Web Clipper to show duplicate page names.
- Fixed a bug that caused the Web Clipper to miss code blocks while parsing webpages.
- Fixed a bug that caused number property values with more than five zeroes after the decimal point to appear blank.
- Fixed a bug that prevented child toggles from inheriting the parent’s color.
- Fixed a bug that prevented some users from receiving email or push notifications.
